| Shinoda no Mori Furusato Kan, a small but warm and friendly place, was newly built and established in June 1, 2002 in Izumi-shi, Osaka. Surrounded by a quiet residential neighborhood, the community center stands by Kagami (mirror) Pond. The name of "Shinoda no Mori" (Shinoda Forrest) appears in Japan's first and oldest collection of essays in the Heian Era (794-1192), "Makura no Soshi" (Pillow Book) written by Sei Shonagon (996), and Sei Shonagon appraises the rich beauty of the forrest in her book. The nature in Shinoda no Mori has been well preserved remaining the environment of ancient days, and therefore unique ancient plants, insects, and birds, which some are in danger of extinction, still inhabit in the neighborhood. The tables in their compact hall are decorated by pretty wild flowers that the staff pick up around the forrest to welcome you, and the specimens of insects found can be viewed in the permanent exhibition. Special events and activities relating to the local history and nature are occasionally held including workshops for local traditional crafts and walking tours to observe the nature. | |
